Toss It Over Your Shoulder is the perfect name for this workshop. When you're ready to show your story to the world you need a little luck...and the ability to toss your words to others for critical feedback.
This workshop is valuable for any genre of fiction, narrative non-fiction, or memoir. You don’t need a complete manuscript to participate but it would be best to have at least half done & a plan for the remainder of your story.
There will be instruction and some in-class writing but the majority of the class will be critique based. One week you'll write your fingers to the bone and toss about ten polished pages to the group. The next week you'll print and critique each submission (or use track-changes then print) and bring to class. Together we’ll discuss each submission and you’ll receive the written feedback from your fellow writers (and from me). And repeat. The last couple of sessions we'll concentrate on query letters and the path to publication.
Facilitated critique groups are awesome because they provide accountability, community, and feedback. All things that are hard to find when you work alone at your computer. It’s great fun to get together with fellow writers and share our common passion. Besides, most non-writers find all our author-talk tiresome. Significant others and friends can’t tell us if we’re on the right track, and they don’t understand why we spend so many hours playing with the characters in our heads.
The group will quickly become familiar with your story and characters and can provide pointed feedback. I find critically reading the work of other writers (even cross-genre) improves my own work. It’s a win-win!
